WICSA2001 Workshop on Architectural Viewpoints

31 August 2001, Amsterdam

Instructions for Participants

We are pleased to invite you to the Workshop on Architectural Viewpoints, 31 August in Amsterdam, as a part of the 2nd Working IFIP Conference on Software Architecture.

As noted in the original Call for Participation, all authors of each accepted submission are invited to attend. In addition, we may have some "surprise" guests.

To attend, you will need to register for WICSA. Please note that the early registration deadline is 30 June.

All position papers will be posted on the workshop web site by 7 July. If you have any updates or corrections to your original submission, please send the new version to Rich Hilliard (rh@wn.net) as soon as possible.

Participants are encouraged to review all of the position papers prior to the meeting, to encourage in-depth discussion.

Agenda

The tentative agenda of the workshop is as follows:

Morning

  • Welcome and Introductions
  • Brief IEEE 1471 Overview
  • 15-minute talks about each position paper.
We invite a talk about each submission. To facilitate and encourage discussion, the talks should (1) use the ontology (terms and concepts) of IEEE 1471, or (2) discuss ways in which the IEEE 1471 ontology is inadequate. The IEEE 1471 notions of Stakeholder, Architectural Concern, Viewpoint, View and Model should help us understand one another. Participants are also encouraged to "Bring a Viewpoint" to the workshop as a part of their talks. Several possible viewpoints were proposed in the submissions including:
    • attribute/decision
    • behavior
    • conceptual
    • feature
    • implementation
    • logical
    • model
    • operational
    • pattern-composition
    • requirements
    • resource
    • test

Attempts to document these viewpoints using the IEEE 1471 scheme may provide useful insights.

Afternoon

After lunch, we hope to address issues related to viewpoints, based on the direction of discussion and interests of the participants. Tentative topics include:

  • Are there architectural description issues that don't fit with the IEEE 1471 ontology of stakeholders, concerns, views and viewpoints?
  • What methods are there for checking consistency between views? How do viewpoint definitions help with consistency checking and view integration?
  • What kinds of architectural knowledge about a system fall "outside" of any particular viewpoint?
  • Where do we go from here? What next steps should we take? A workshop proceedings or summary? Article? Future meetings? A viewpoint library or handbook?

We were very pleased with the submissions and look forward to a stimulating workshop. See you in Amsterdam!
